Description

Black House Studio is a modern, eco-friendly, glamping-style holiday property in the heart of Gisborne, NZ.

With expansive views over Gisborne city and the bay, but only minutes from cafes and amenities, you will love our little slice of urban paradise.

Harnessing the many hours of sunshine we receive here on the East Coast the Studio (and main house) are run on solar power and gas (for water heating and cooking).

The studio is close (20 metres) to our family home but with private spaces and vast views it feels isolated.

The Space
Wrapped in Shou Sugi Ban (burnt timber cladding), this 20 foot container has been transformed from a utilitarian object to a beautiful calm space with a linen and organic cotton dressed queen bed and a small indoor seating area.

The studio is the perfect space for a weekend getaway, or to escape for a little alone time. The interior spaces are filled with calming natural materials and with an outdoor bathroom and kitchen you are close to nature for the ultimate relaxing stay.

Outside is a hidden outdoor bath with views across the city. Tucked behind the studio you will find a glamping style kitchenette (covered) with a gas burner to boil the kettle or perhaps whip up a simple meal.

The outdoor covered bathroom includes a non-flushing compost toilet and shower. Toiletries and towels are provided.

Guest access
Guests have access to the entire studio space. Guests share a car parking area with our main family home before walking 20m up a steep path to the studio.

The space is separate from our family home but still within close proximity so please bear in mind you may hear the sounds of children, dogs and neighbours.

Please be aware, as with all glamping experiences, you will be more exposed to the weather and you may need an umbrella or coat in the winter to make a comfortable dash to the car. If you are booking in the cooler months the facilities are outside and a coat may be needed to stay warm. We will provide heating to keep the inside warm in winter and in the summer to keep you cool.

Other things to note
As the studio in on the hill our vehicle access is a little steep and bumpy and turning can be a little challenging. This is our main driveway so it is safe and not at all a risk.

Pedestrian access is also available down a steep path (100 m) to the roadside. From there you will easily be able to walk downhill to the village (15 minutes) or to town (25 minutes).

As the studio is run with solar power we need to be aware of power usage throughout the darker months. We avoid using any heating appliances (kettle, toaster, hair dryer etc) as they draw power very quickly.

Water is heated with gas, as is cooking.

We have a very friendly toy poodle who will welcome you with lots of noise and excitement.

The studio has a non flushing compositing toilet.

There is a gas hob, kettle and cooking essentials in the kitchen but no oven.
